Ephraim Wegner’s highlights of 2009

After longer consideration I finally decided to report about the events taking place in Freiburg.

Beside many projects and a Cronicaster release of the trio Skug there were two remarkable highlights in 2009: a performance in the underground car park of the University of Freiburg and developing a prologue of Georges Aperghis „Le Petit chaperon rouge“ together with a primary school class. Moreover, I familiarised with the software „Pure Data“ that it was possible to use it for several events.

Working on the Le Petit chaperon rouge prologue it impressed me a lot how easily children approached experimental music and created impressive works with the help of playful instructions. One of the pupils even presented a work for which he preserved and played a piano with different objects – completely in the terms of contemporary music.

The three-day lasting festival Ug3 taking place in the underground car park was a „didactic play“ for me concerning cultural politics and cost a lot of strength and perseverance. Particularly, because the work was unnecessarily complicated by different official hurdles. For example, we first had the approval by the city of Freiburg to perform the festival in the Konzerthausgarage near the railway station. However, two weeks before the festival started we got a refusal by the authorities. After endless and sometimes frustrating negotiations we got an alternative location that didn´t really fit our expectations and needs.
I am really proud we nevertheless managed to realise this event and to present an exciting program, the exhibition as well as all planned concerts.

Finally I would like to thank following people for her support: Julia Weinmann, Miguel Carvalhais, Guillaume Chastel, Ruth Chastel, Anselm Dalferth, Lee Ferguson, Stephen Athoft, Alexander Grebtschenko, Clovis Vallois, Christiane Neugebauer, Kathrin Nieder, Monika Engelmann, Tobias Beck, Tobias Grewenig, Volker Hennes, Matthias Neuenhofer, Dirk Specht, Sebastian Berweck, Sumi Jang, Thomas Schmölz, Albert Schultis, Cem Güney, Gregory Büttner, Oliver Peters, Joey Schneider, Jens Galler…
