New release: “Eiffel” by Luis Marte

Crónica is very proud to announce the newest release in the Unlimited Release series: “Eiffel” by Luis Marte.

Generated solely from mobile communication devices, such as smartphones, tablets and media players, “Eiffel” uses current technology to deliver a comment on itself, on its grit and coarseness, on its scale and permanence. Built from technology, “Eiffel” is pervaded with mechanical sounds and rhythms, distortions and harshness, and is titled after an enduring technological landmark, the Eiffel Tower, and its creator, Alexandre Gustave Eiffel.

Luis Marte works on improvisation and in the search and exploration of the field of sound with all kinds of elements, both conventional or unconventional. Since the start of the 1990s, he crossed paths with artists such as Francisco López, Jorge Haro, Pablo Reche, Tzesne, Klauss, Xabier Erkizia, among others. He organizes the label and artist collective Fuga and the Fuga Jurásica Festival, the main event for sound experimentation in South America. He was the director for culture at the Argentinian Museum of Natural Sciences and he currently coordinates various cycles of music and video in Argentina, Perú and Spain, as well as the museum night in the city of Buenos Aires.

You can download “Eiffel” as AIFF or MP3 files directly from Crónica and free of charge. Donations are very welcome! :)

Crónica winter promotion

The first rains have arrived and, although it’s still not technically winter, it certainly starts feeling like it. To warm the spirit to face the cold weather, there’s nothing quite like new good music…

Knowing that, we are happy to offer another of our customary winter promotions: from now until the end of December, all records ordered directly from Crónica will give you the choice to receive a free second release! Just send us a note with your order, indicating which other release or releases (of the same price or lower) you want and we will be happy to gift them to you. Don’t forget: this promotion is good until December 31st, for all CD, DVD and vinyl releases available at our online store.

Micromelancolié’s Crónicast 94 reviewed by Disquiet

Micromelancolié
The Crónica podcast is a steady source of abstract sound, but abstraction comes in many forms. To listen to the fragments that comprise the latest entry in the long-running series — it is number 94, and is by Micromelancolié, aka Poland-based musician Robert Skrzyński — is to hear slim noises, bright crunches, whizzes of passing static, and other material that is truncated just shy of recognizability. The manner in which the material is collated suggests if not composition or narrative, then at least association and sequence. Apparently some of the source audio comes from recordings from two labels, 77industry and 49animals. This might explain why for all their abstraction, the noises seem, in fact, orderly — because their presence here is a secondary stage of collection, of curation. Whatever the provenance, the result is best appreciated as a survey of tensile sonic structures, of small noises given the chance to be considered as idealized objects. Bracing stuff.

“eins bis sechzehn” reviewed by Vital Wekly

eins bis sechzehn
The other new project on Cronica is more an art like project dealing with ruins of hotels. Julia Weinmann did the photography of them, while one Ephraim Wegner made recordings in these abandoned places. Waking up and down those stairs, large empty rooms of bare concrete. There is not of processing going on here, although it’s also not entirely without. Wegner was originally a DJ, but now deals with field recordings and sound installations and creates music for films. A rather short CD here, only twenty minutes in time, with recordings, I believe, from various places. It’s I think a fine work of pretty interesting field recordings and it sounds great, but I must say the reason behind all this eludes me a bit. Maybe it’s too brief for me, these five rather short and one longer piece, and perhaps it needed as much as attention as the whole package has. In a strange way this looks very much like a recent package on Gruenrekorder, more so than one on Cronica Electronica. It’s as a total experience, image and sound (in that order) quite a fine package. (FdW)
